Hondarribia and Irun

Hondarribia and Irun

Hondarribia and Irun mark the official start of the historic Northern Way of St. James, which has been designated a World Heritage Site. From here, pilgrims can choose between two routes:

• Coastal Route: this stage offers spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea, passing through Mount Jaizkibel and fishing villages such as Pasaia before reaching Donostia/San Sebastián.

• Interior Route: starting from Irun by crossing the Avenida Bridge, this historic route heads into the heart of Gipuzkoa, passing through villages such as Astigarraga, with its authentic Way of St. James pilgrimage tradition, and offering the traveller the chance to commune with the rural landscape.

Both routes are clearly signposted with shells, yellow arrows and information boards, making the experience easier for pilgrims and visitors alike. So, setting out on the Way of St. James from Hondarribia-Irun is to immerse yourself in its history and natural beauty of the surrounding area right from the start.
