Hondarribia and Irun

The Alardes of Hondarribia and Irun are two of the Basque Country’s most iconic celebrations, where every year history, culture and tradition are rolled out in two thrilling parades.

In Hondarribia, the Alarde de la Virgen de Guadalupe, held on 8 September, commemorates the town’s resistance against the French army in 1638. This procession renews an ancient vow made to the city’s patron saint and winds its way through the streets of the historic centre to the beat of drums, formed by uniformed companies and their Cantinera (maid of honour), culminating in the traditional ascent to the sanctuary on Mount Jaizkibel. The celebration forms part of the town’s patron saint festivities, which run from 6 to 11 September and include cultural activities, concerts and a variety of events that fill the town with atmosphere and colour.

In Irun, the Alarde de San Marcial, held every 30 June, commemorates the victory over French troops in 1522 at the Battle of San Marcial. The festivities begin on 29 June with a review of the troops and weapons, and continue with a parade through the town to the Chapel of San Marcial on Mount Aldabe. The period costumes, the sound of the drums and the active participation of the local community make this event a lively celebration in which tradition, folklore and historical remembrance come together.

Both festivals are notable for the high rate of citizen participation, serving to embody the historical and cultural identity of Hondarribia and Irun.

They are a unique opportunity to discover the local area’s history through its most deeply-rooted traditions and to experience first-hand the energy of festivals that have endured for centuries.
