From the estuary to the bridges
Bilbao
The Bilbao estuary has marked the city’s history and its transformation, and its bridges are the best reflection of that evolution. From historic landmarks such as the San Antón Bridge to more modern structures such as the Zubizuri Bridge, exploring Bilbao via its bridges allows you to discover different landscapes, architectural styles and some of the city’s most iconic spots.
The route passes through areas alongside the estuary, taking in the Arenal Bridge, the Ayuntamiento Bridge and the La Salve Bridge, which forms part of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. One of the best ways to see them is from the estuary itself, on boat trips on which you can enjoy Bilbao from a different perspective.
The tour can be rounded off with a visit to the iconic Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered to be the world’s first transporter bridge with a metal structure. Opened in 1893, it links the towns of Portugalete and Getxo via a cable car suspended over the estuary and offers spectacular panoramic views from its upper walkway.
