Irun, the Basque Country’s chocolate-making tradition
Hondarribia and Irun
Irun is renowned for its chocolate-making tradition, which dates back to 1838 with the historic Elgorriaga factory, known for its distinctive aroma and quality, and which went on to become a supplier to the Royal Household. This legacy has made the city the place to go for chocolate in the Basque Country.
Although Elgorriaga ceased production in Irun in 1997, its legacy lives on in the area, where local artisan confectioners continue to produce high-quality chocolate products such as “Chocolates Irun”, which is made entirely by hand in a continuous production process that guarantees 100 per cent freshness. They use only high-quality raw materials, such as Belgian chocolate coatings with varying percentages of cocoa and from different origins. No preservatives.
