Stroll through the Medieval Almond
Vitoria-Gasteiz
The historic centre, known as the medieval quarter of Vitoria-Gasteiz or the “Medieval Almond” due to its almond-shaped layout, is the historic heart of the city and preserves the urban plan of the old village of Gasteiz. Its narrow streets, tower houses, historic squares and the remains of the medieval ramparts allow visitors to explore centuries of urban development and gain an insight into the city’s origins.
This area features notable Renaissance palaces such as Montehermoso, Villa Suso and Escoriaza-Esquivel, alongside the Cathedral of Saint Mary, a symbol of the city’s efforts to restore and showcase its historical heritage.
A visit to the medieval quarter also offers the chance to enjoy the local culinary culture, with its poteo tradition (going from bar to bar and having a drink and a pintxo in each), which form part of the social life and atmosphere of the historic centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz.
